Yu Bingyou studied Ceramic Art at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute (2008–2013) and traditional porcelain-making and firing techniques under Zheng Laigen (2010–2012). He operated an independent ceramics and wood-firing studio from 2011 to 2017. Since 2017, he has worked as an instructor at The Pottery Workshop and an independent ceramic artist.

“I began working with ceramics shortly after entering university. It has now been sixteen or seventeen years, and this is the only profession I have ever pursued.

As a teenager, I was fascinated by fire, water, clay, and other fundamental elements of nature. I have always been drawn to understanding things at their most essential level.

That instinct continues to shape my ceramic practice. I focus intently on line, texture, and character; structure, function, and detail; as well as materials, firing, and technique—the intrinsic qualities of the vessel itself. I prefer not to tell elaborate stories about my work; instead, I let the objects themselves—their form, function, materials, and craftsmanship—remain the focus.”
