Story

prunus was founded by a group of coffee lovers — baristas, enthusiasts, food-obsessed diners, tableware collectors, and culinary tool collectors. What brought us together was a shared belief: good coffee and good objects belong in the same space.

Our vision is inspired by the global evolution of fifth-wave coffee culture. To us, the fifth wave represents a stage where specialty coffee is no longer a niche craft, but a mature, design-driven, hospitality-focused industry — one that can scale without losing its soul. Coffee is not isolated from life; it lives alongside dining, design, ritual, and the objects we use every day.

At the same time, we recognized a gap in Canada’s tableware landscape. Too often, selections are limited and repetitive, shaped by import convenience rather than thoughtful curation. We experienced this firsthand — as collectors, as diners, and as café operators.

So we chose a different path.

We traveled to the places where our goods are made. We studied materials, production methods, and design philosophies. We embraced the challenges of sourcing beyond the obvious. Every piece we carry is selected for what we believe matters most: simplicity, solidity, functionality, and the power to elevate everyday dining.

prunus is built on the belief that well-made objects and well-made coffee share the same values. Our tableware is curated with intention. Our coffee is sourced from selected roasters and prepared on site with precision — served exclusively as espresso-based coffee, crafted with care.

We began renovating our Richmond, BC space in the summer of 2023 and completed it in the winter of 2025. The process was long — not only because thoughtful sourcing takes time, but because we encountered the same limitations locally in building materials as we did in tableware selection. That journey reinforced our conviction: if something meaningful does not yet exist here, we can build it.

prunus is more than a retail store or a café.
It is a statement that thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and hospitality deserve a place in Greater Vancouver — and that when we want something better, we can create it.
